Reusable period underwear
What is period underwear?
Period underwear looks and feels just like regular underwear but is specially designed to keep moisture away from your skin as they absorb menstrual blood and prevent leaks.
How does period underwear work?
Period underwear is built to completely replace single-use disposable products. Most contain 3 to 4 layers of fabric on the gusset - a moisture-wicking top layer to keep you fresh and dry, an absorbent core layer to lock in the liquid, and an outer leak resistant barrier to prevent any leaks.
How do you wash period underwear?
To ensure the life, absorbency and colour of your underwear, it is advisable to follow three simple steps:
- Rinse - After use, rinse in cold water to remove all the blood.
- Wash
- Hand wash or pop into the washing machine (in a mesh laundry bag, if
you wish) at a maximum temperature of 30ºC. No need for bleach or fabric
softener. - Air dry - Leave them to air dry. Please do not tumble dry.
Does period underwear smell?
No, period underwear does not smell!
The underwear is designed with odour control technology and the materials used naturally keep bacteria at bay. So you can wear them with confidence and comfort during your period.
How long can you wear period underwear for?
It is usually recommended to change your period underwear every 6 to 8 hours, so you can wear them throughout the day or night.
However, the duration of wearing them may vary depending on the level of absorbency you require. To select a suitable absorbency level, you can check the description of each garment as specified on our website.
We offer a wide range of brands that supply period underwear that ranges from light flow to super-heavy flow, and some can be worn for up to 12 hours.
How many period pants do I need?
Everybody is different. The amount of period pants you need depends on your flow and how long your periods tend to last. Research tells us that most people need 6-7 pairs (remember they last up to 2 years) to switch to period pants completely. We recommend three pairs for the perfect starter set.
How do I know which size to get?
When selecting underwear, go with your typical size. If you're unsure, our size guide can assist you in determining the best size for you. Remember to measure your hips at the widest point for accurate measurement.
Does your period underwear contain PFAS?
At Sanavay, we're proud to work with brands that prioritise customer safety and environmental sustainability; brands that utilise natural, breathable materials that are gentle on both the skin and the environment. We believe in ethical and responsible sourcing, and support brands that share these values.
How do I store my period panties if I can't wash them immediately?
Sometimes, life happens, and there's no way to get everything done as planned. But no worries. If you can’t wash your panties immediately, just rinse them right after use and hang them up to dry. After that, just put them in your laundry basket along with your other clothes and wash them when it suits you.
We recommend using a separate laundry bag to give your panties extra care.
Reusable menstrual cups
What is a menstrual cup?
Menstrual cups are a great alternative to tampons or pads. They're safe, comfortable, and can be used again and again. The cup is made of rubber or silicone, and is inserted into the vagina to collect period fluid. After emptying the cup, it can be washed and re-inserted. There are many different designs, colours, and sizes to choose from.
Does the menstrual cup leak?
No worries! If you're wearing your menstrual cup correctly, it should be leak-free.
The cup is designed to create a seal that prevents any leakage once it's properly inserted into your vagina.
Make sure it's positioned low enough, near the entrance, and that the holes around the rim remain clean and free of obstructions to ensure the best possible seal. If you're experiencing leaks, the cup was likely inserted incorrectly and hasn't formed the proper seal.
Can you wear a menstrual cup whilst exercising?
Yes!
Cups are definitely a great choice for exercising, particularly when you're swimming. They're discreetly placed inside so you don't have to worry about them messing with your workout attire. And the best part? They're long-lasting and won't cause any discomfort so you can exercise for hours without any worries.
How do you know when your menstrual cup is full?
When using a menstrual cup, pay attention to your flow. Since a menstrual cup can hold more blood than a regular tampon, you can wear it for up to 12 hours, but you may need to empty it more frequently on your heavier days. Keep an eye on the amount of blood collected in the cup and empty it as needed. With practice, you'll soon become an expert!
How do I clean my menstrual cup?
It is important to properly care for your reusable menstrual cup. Before reinserting it into your vagina, make sure to wash and wipe it clean. Be sure to follow the hygiene and care instructions provided on the packaging to ensure safe and effective use.
